Bringing up a child with autism can be a challenge for parents, especially when friends and relatives do not understand the issues. It is not an illness or a disease, it just means their brain works in a different way to other people. A person with autism may need little or no help, while others may need help with daily life. A person with Autism experiences the world differently from others. They often have difficulty communicating and interacting with other people. They find it hard to understand how others are feeling. Sensory issues can affect how they smell, hear, or see things and therefore they find things like bright lights, loud noises stressful and uncomfortable. They get upset in unfamiliar surroundings or if they are out of their daily routine and often think and do the same thing repeatedly.

Stress is a normal part of life but we know that having a family member with autism can be even more stressful. Below are some of the things parents with autistic children feel on a daily basis. If you are struggling with anything on this list, this is normal and we are here to help you.

  • Are you coming to terms with a diagnosis and what it means for your child?
  • Are you finding it hard to manage daily life with an autistic child?
  • Having trouble managing challenging behaviour in your autistic child ?
  • Having difficulty helping your autistic child build confidence and a positive self-image?
  • Find you need a break from caring for your autistic child but don’t know how to get respite?
  • Are you having trouble navigating the service system?
